Nearing return to practice
Riddick (shoulder) is expected to begin practicing Week 8, Troy Renck of Denver 7 News reports.
Analysis: Riddick has spent the entire regular season on IR due to a shoulder injury suffered during the preseason. The veteran pass-catching back will be eligible to be activated as early as Week 9, but it's worth mentioning that the Broncos will only be able to bring back two players from IR this season. Rookie quarterback Drew Lock (thumb) is a favorite candidate to return, which would leave Riddick competing with Jake Butt (knee) and Tim Patrick (hand) for the final spot.

Headed for IR
General manager John Elway told reporters that Riddick (shoulder) will be placed on injured reserve, Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Riddick suffered a fractured shoulder when going out for a pass in Denver's second preseason contest. There was some question as to whether Denver would float the veteran back on the 53-man roster until he healed, but Elway indicated that down-roster spots are too precious for injuries that might take more than a few weeks to heal. When healthy, Riddick is a better, more established version of Devontae Booker -- a pass-catching back who Denver will keep for the time being. He figures to slide…read more

Out 6-to-8 weeks
Riddick sustained a slight fracture in his shoulder during Thursday's preseason game against Seattle and will miss 6-to-8 weeks, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.
Analysis: Klis also reports that the injury will not require surgery. Riddick reportedly didn't feel any discomfort until Friday morning, at which point he notified the team's medical staff and received tests that revealed the slight fracture. Riddick had been working with the first team in camp and is expected to play an important pass-catching/third-down role when healthy.

Minimal opportunity in debut
Riddick netted minus-2 yards on his only rush and failed to bring in either of his two targets in the Broncos' 22-14 preseason loss to the Seahawks on Thursday.
Analysis: The veteran suited up in something other than a Lions uniform for the first time Thursday, but the results weren't exactly memorable. Riddick had worked with the first team in camp earlier in the week, and he's expected to play an important pass-catching/third-down role in the coming season. While his performance versus the Seahawks doesn't exactly serve as a ringing endorsement of what he might be able to offer in Denver, his long track record of dependability over six seasons in Motown…read more

Garners first-team reps
Riddick worked with the first-team offense during Monday's practice, Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Jhabvala added that Riddick's time with the starters included a 30-yard catch-and-run from Joe Flacco. Much like he was utilized in Detroit, Riddick's potential role in Denver figures to be almost exclusively in the passing game, with sophomores Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman earning most of the carries. It's probably too early to mark Riddick down as the No. 3 back with ink, but running backs coach Curtis Modkins worked with Riddick in Detroit, and coach Vic Fangio has tried defending him…read more

Signing with Denver
Riddick will sign with the Broncos on Thursday, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Riddick remained unemployed for less than a week, as he wasted no time finding a new home in Denver. He should add value to the Broncos' backfield as a change-of-pace back and strong pass-catcher, but Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman are still both expected to operate as the team's top two options when it comes to usage. Riddick is coming off a season in Detroit where he caught 61 passes for 384 yards, while also amassing 171 yards on the ground on 40 carries.

Nears deal with Denver
Riddick appears poised to sign with the Broncos, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.
Analysis: The Lions freed up some cap space by parting ways with Riddick, but the 28-year-old can still be a nice complementary piece in the Denver backfield thanks to his utility as a pass-catcher. From a fantasy perspective though, Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman will remain the Bronco backs to target.

Likely bound for Broncos or Saints
Riddick is likely to sign with New Orleans or Denver, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.
Analysis: Since being released by the Lions on Sunday, Riddick has visited with both the Saints and Broncos. Both meetings concluded without a contract agreement. The 28-year-old receiving specialist would project to serve a depth role in either location, behind either Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray in New Orleans, or Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman in Denver.

Visiting Denver
Riddick will visit the Broncos on Monday, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.
Analysis: Released by Detroit on Saturday, the 28-year-old running back left his Sunday visit to New Orleans without a contract. Riddick could provide a slight passing-down upgrade on Devontae Booker, who had 34 carries and 38 receptions last season. The Broncos might also ask Phillip Lindsay to take over Booker's snaps from 2018.

Checking out Saints
Riddick is scheduled to visit the Saints, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Riddick didn't take long to line up a visit after the Lions cut him Saturday. His experience on passing downs could be useful for depth behind Alvin Kamara, but the 28-year-old has never shown much explosiveness or any real value on the ground. It shouldn't be a major concern for Latavius Murray if Riddick ends up signing with New Orleans.

Cut by Lions
Riddick was cut by Detroit on Saturday, Erik Schlitt of USA Today reports.
Analysis: Riddick was a favorite of prior offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, but Matt Patricia and new offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell were evidently less appreciative. Riddick's elusiveness badly declined following his breakout season in 2015, when he caught 80 passes for 697 yards and three touchdowns on 99 targets. His highest yards per target total in the subsequent three years was just 6.3, and Riddick struggled as a runner throughout his career. With his passing game contributions…read more

May not be cap casualty
Riddick is a candidate to open the 2019 season as the No. 2 running back despite the Lions' recent addition of C.J. Anderson along with the re-signing of Zach Zenner, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: The report focuses on the fact that Riddick is making nearly double that of Anderson's and Zenner's combined contracts while suggesting the scatback may not be the cap casualty some have speculated, given that Detroit currently has the eighth-most cap space in the league, according to the NFLPA's most recent report. However, Birkett also notes that the Lions can move on from any of these three players with a minimal cap hit, so it appears the backup situation behind Kerryon Johnson could be a…read more

Future uncertain
Riddick (groin) isn't guaranteed to remain with the Lions in 2019, Nate Atkins of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Detroit could reportedly save $3.4 million by setting Riddick free this offseason, a decision that will depend to some degree on how comfortable the organization is with Kerryon Johnson taking on an expanded role as a receiver. Given that Johnson (6.7 yards per reception, 5.5 yards per target) was more efficient than Riddick last season (6.3 YPR, 5.2 YPT), the 2018 second-round pick looks capable of handling more responsibilities on passing downs. Riddick's chances of sticking around will…read more

Injures groin Sunday
Riddick suffered a groin injury during Sunday's game at Green Bay, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Prior to his departure in the third quarter, Riddick had four carries for 24 yards but hadn't been targeted by Matthew Stafford. If he doesn't return, Zach Zenner and LeGarrette Blount will finish out the contest as the Lions' available running backs.

Silenced by Vikings
Riddick rushed three times for minus-two yards and caught four of five targets for seven yards during Sunday's 27-9 loss to Minnesota.
Analysis: Splitting time with Zach Zenner and LeGarrette Blount, Riddick arguably had his worst game of the season against a stout Vikings defense that entered the game having allowed the fourth-least total yards per game in 2018. Still without either a touchdown or more than 60 scrimmage yards in any one game this season, Riddick is nothing short of a desperation play for any fantasy owners still in competition during the Week 17 season finale.

Effective on ground in loss
Riddick rushed eight times for 47 yards and caught two of three targets for nine yards in Sunday's 14-13 loss to Buffalo.
Analysis: Riddick was Detroit's leading rusher in this one, though Zach Zenner had the better overall performance with 45 yards and a short touchdown on 10 carries. Look for Riddick to be more involved as a receiver against the Vikings in Week 16, with Detroit likely to fall behind and employ a more pass-heavy formula.

Leading receiver against Arizona
Riddick rushed six times for 28 yards and caught all four of his targets for 30 yards during Sunday's 17-3 victory over Arizona.
Analysis: The Lions went with a ground-and-pound approach against a Cardinals defense that entered the game having allowed the 10th-fewest yards per pass attempt (7.2), as Detroit finished the game with 31 rushing attempts versus 23 pass attempts. Riddick ultimately tied for the team lead in targets while Kenny Golladay drew heavy coverage from a Patrick Peterson-led Cardinals secondary. Averaging 50 total yards over his last six games but still without a single touchdown on the season, Riddick will…read more

Totals 58 yards
Riddick rushed eight times for 32 yards and secured three of four targets for 26 yards during Sunday's 30-16 loss to the Rams.
Analysis: Riddick figured to be in line for a prominent pass-catching role while the Lions tried to keep pace with the Rams' explosive offense, but quarterback Matthew Stafford clearly is more than comfortable with peppering receiver Bruce Ellington on short routes to keep the chains moving. Riddick has now been out-targeted by Ellington 26 to 15 over the past three weeks and hasn't topped 60 scrimmage yards in any game in 2018. The scatback will be hard to trust for fantasy purposes when the Lions do…read more

Prominent as pass catcher again
Riddick rushed twice for 12 yards and brought in all seven targets for 48 yards in the Lions' 23-16 loss to the Bears on Thursday.
Analysis: As expected with both Kerryon Johnson and Marvin Jones down with knee injuries, Riddick saw a hefty workload. However, as customary, the majority was on the receiving end, as he paced the team in catches and checked in second in yardage through the air. Riddick's role figures to remain unchanged irrespective of Johnson's status, but a continued absence by Jones in Week 13 against the Giants will very likely lead to a solid target volume for Riddick.

Plenty of receiving work in win
Riddick netted zero yards on his sole rush and brought in five of seven targets for 30 yards in the Lions' 20-19 win over the Panthers on Sunday.
Analysis: As expected, Riddick served as a de facto possession receiver, often lining out in the slot in the absence of both Marvin Jones (knee) and the recently traded Golden Tate. Riddick's role remained the same even after Kerryon Johnson exited the game with a knee injury, and he'll likely be in for another heavy workload in the passing game versus the Bears in a Thanksgiving Day divisional showdown in four days.

Snags six passes in divisional loss
Riddick secured six of seven targets for 60 yards during Sunday's 34-22 loss to the Bears.
Analysis: Riddick wasn't given a carry for the second consecutive week, but he again served as a key piece of the passing offense as the Lions look for underneath receivers to step up in the wake of Golden Tate's trade to Philadelphia. While the scatback's value in PPR formats is clearly trending upwards as a result, Riddick's upside is severely capped by the presence of fellow tailback Kerryon Johnson, who has also been getting more involved as a pass catcher lately and now has 15 receptions (on 19…read more

Seven catches in return
Riddick (knee) didn't get a rushing attempt but caught seven of eight targets for 36 yards in Sunday's 24-9 loss to Minnesota.
Analysis: Seeing his first action since Week 5, the receiving back led his team in catches. Riddick's value is limited mostly to PPR formats, but his return served as a source of frustration for Kerryon Johnson's owners, as Johnson managed his lowest scrimmage yard total (44) after emerging as a dual threat with both running and receiving skills out of the backfield during Riddick's absence. Look for Riddick's own receiving skills to be on display once again when the Lions travel to Chicago in Week 10.

Ready to return
Riddick (knee) was a full practice participant Friday and has been cleared to return for Sunday's game at Minnesota, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: With Riddick free of an injury designation for Sunday's game, Kerryon Johnson once again faces competition for passing-down snaps and targets. It'll be interesting to see if the Lions still keep Johnson on the field in some obvious passing situations after he caught six balls for 69 yards in last week's 28-14 loss to Seattle. The rookie has hauled in 21 of 26 targets this season, but Riddick has a much longer track record as one of the league's better pass-catching backs.
