Gets one-year deal from New England
Mitchell and the Patriots agreed to terms Wednesday on a one-year, $3 million contract, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Mitchell served as a starter in Houston's secondary in 2021, appearing in 14 contests and totaling 60 tackles, 10 pass breakups and an interception.. The addition of Mitchell helps shore up New England's depth at cornerback after the team elected not to place its franchise tag on J.C. Jackson before allowing him to leave for the Chargers in free agency.

Time up in Houston
The Texans are releasing Mitchell on Thursday, Cole Thompson of SI.com reports.
Analysis: Mitchell's release will free up roughly $3 million in cap space for the Texans. The 29-year-old operated as a starter last season, and he accumulated 60 tackles, 10 pass breakups, one interception and three forced fumbles across 14 appearances. Depending on what sort of interest Mitchell gathers as a free agent, he may need to accept more of a depth role at his next landing spot.

Cleared from injury report
Mitchell (undisclosed) is no longer on the Texans' injury report Friday.
Analysis: Mitchell hasn't played since Week 14 against the Seahawks after entering COVID protocols, then missing Week 16 due to an undisclosed reason. Now healthy, Mitchell should return to his role as a starting cornerback Sunday against the 49ers.

Not playing against Chargers
Mitchell (undisclosed) is inactive Sunday against the Chargers, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Mitchell cleared the COVID-19 protocols Saturday, but he didn't practice during the week so his absence is not surprising. He should be able to return to action next week on the road against the 49ers if he's able to practice fully in the coming days.

Clears COVID protocols
Mitchell was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.
Analysis: Mitchell's return will be a boost to the Texans' defense after he missed their Week 15 matchup with Jacksonville. The veteran has been a steady presence in the secondary, recording 52 tackles (39 solo), nine passes defensed, three forced fumbles and an interception in 12 games. He'll look to add to those numbers Sunday against the Chargers.

Placed on COVID-19 list
Mitchell (undisclosed) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday.
Analysis: Mitchell will need to spend some time away from the team, although it's not yet clear whether he's tested positive for COVID-19. If the 29-year-old is unavailable Sunday against the Texans, Tavierre Thomas and Lonnie Johnson could see additional playing time.

Will play Week 4
Mitchell (concussion) is active for Sunday's contest against the Bills, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Mitchell will make his return Sunday after missing Week 3 with a concussion. The 29-year-old corner played 68 defensive snaps and totaled five tackles during his only healthy game this season. He only practiced in limited fashion this week, so he may be on a snap count against the Bills.

Listed as questionable for Sunday
Mitchell (concussion) has been listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Bills.
Analysis: Mitchell left Week 2 with a concussion. He was unable to clear concussion protocols during the short turnaround and was inactive for Week 3. The 29-year-old was able to log to limited practices to end the week, but it's unclear if he will suit up in Week 4. If he is inactive, expect Tremon Smith and Desmond King to see increased snaps once again.

Won't play Thursday
Mitchell (concussion) is ruled out for Thursday's game against the Panthers.
Analysis: Mitchell remains in the concussion protocol, so he won't be available for Thursday Night Football. The veteran cornerback's next opportunity to suit up will come Oct. 3 versus the Bills. In his stead, Tremon Smith and Desmond King will be candidates to take on increased defensive snaps.

Doesn't practice Tuesday
Mitchell (concussion) didn't participate in practice Tuesday.
Analysis: Mitchell has yet to practice this week and is unlikely to play Thursday against the Panthers. If the 29-year-old is sidelined, expect Tremon Smith and Desmond King to see increased snaps in Houston's secondary.

Enters concussion protocol
Coach David Culley revealed Monday that Mitchell is in the concussion protocol, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Mitchell was forced out of Sunday's loss to the Browns due to his injury, and he'll have several steps to clear before he's able to return to the field. If the 29-year-old is unable to play in Thursday night's matchup against the Panthers, Tremon Smith and Desmond King will likely see increased work in Houston's secondary.

Being evaluated for concussion
Mitchell exited Sunday's Week 2 matchup against the Browns to be evaluated for a concussion, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.
Analysis: It's unclear how Mitchell suffered the injury, but he was spotted heading to the locker room. He's questionable to return, and his absence likely means an increased role for Tremon Smith and Desmond King.

Lands with Texans
Mitchell signed a two-year deal worth up to $7.5 million, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Mitchell took a big step forward with the Browns in 2020, playing a career-high 1,071 snaps while logging 65 tackles and 13 passes defended. He's now been rewarded by the Texans with a new multi-year deal and will be relied upon to bolster what was a poor secondary last season.

Will play in wild-card round
Mitchell (personal) will play in Sunday's wild-card round game against the Steelers.
Analysis: Mitchell missed Friday's practice after what turned out to be a false positive COVID-19 test. He has tested negative since and gotten clearance to play, and Mitchell should play an increased role in a Cleveland secondary that will be without top cornerback Denzel Ward (reserve/COVID-19).

Expected to play
Mitchell (personal) remains questionable but is expected to play Sunday against the Steelers, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Analysis: Mitchell was held out of practice Friday with what a source said was a positive test for COVID-19, but he tested negative Saturday and was also deemed false positive. His availability is an issue, as Cleveland will be without top cornerback Denzel Ward (reserve/COVID-19) and Kevin Johnson (reserve/COVID-19). Mitchell is now considered questionable but is expected to play.

Questionable for wild-card round
Mitchell (personal) is questionable for Sunday's wild-card round game against the Steelers, Andrew Gribble of the Browns' official site reports.
Analysis: Mitchell's questionable designation isn't injury-related, though the exact reason for his inclusion on the injury report is unknown. If Mitchell's unable to suit up Sunday, Tavierre Thomas would be in line for a larger role in Cleveland's undermanned cornerback corps.

Piles up 12 tackles
Mitchell posted 12 tackles (11 solo) in Sunday's 49-38 win over the Cowboys.
Analysis: Mitchell led the Browns in tackles since Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott attempted 58 passes Sunday, but the cornerback's coverage has been decent this season. Through four games, Mitchell has allowed a 99.1 passer rating while filling in for Greedy Williams (shoulder). Mitchell will likely maintain a consistent role even when Williams returns, but he's probably not worth an add in IDP formats with Sunday's numbers considered an anomaly.

Ready to play
Mitchell (knee) is officially active for Sunday's game against Washington, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
Analysis: Mitchell was a full participant during Thursday's practice, so this news isn't quite a surprise. With Greedy Williams (shoulder) officially inactive for the contest, Mitchell is in line to take over the starting job at one of the cornerback positions.

Returns to practice Thursday
Mitchell (knee) returned to practice Thursday, Marla Ridenour of The Akron Beacon Journal reports.
Analysis: Mitchell has been sidelined since Monday due to a knee injury, but the cornerback is back out on the field taking reps alongside his teammates. The Browns are currently dealing with a considerable number of injuries in their secondary, so Mitchell could see a sizable amount of work now that he has returned.

Misses Monday's practice
Mitchell did not practice Monday due to a knee injury, Joshua Gunter and Mark Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer report.
Analysis: Mitchell is one of a rapidly expanding list of injured cornerbacks for the Browns. He joins Kevin Johnson (abdomen), Greedy Williams (shoulder) and M.J. Stewart (hamstring) on the sidelines.

Under contract for 2020
Mitchell recorded 21 tackles, three passes defensed and one interception over 15 games in 2019.
Analysis: Mitchell had significant run early in the season when Cleveland dealt with injuries to its starting cornerback duo of Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams. Once those two returned, Mitchell's playing time took a drastic hit. He has one year remaining on a three-year deal signed in 2018. With Ward and Williams, who were high-round draft picks the last two years, returning in 2020, Mitchell is looking at a depth role.
