Not playing Saturday
Penny (knee) is inactive for Saturday's contest against the Rams.
Analysis: When the Seahawks released their final injury report of the week Thursday, Penny didn't have a designation, despite experiencing a downgrade in activity from full to limited. The team tacked on a questionable designation Friday, while at the same time elevating Alex Collins from the practice squad. With Penny and DeeJay Dallas (coach's decision) sidelined for the wild-card round, Seattle's backfield will be headed by Chris Carson, with Carlos Hyde and Collins in reserve.

Now questionable for Saturday
The Seahawks added Penny (knee) to the injury report Friday, listing him as questionable for Saturday's wild-card game against the Rams.
Analysis: Prior to Friday, Penny made his lone appearance on the Seahawks' practice report Thursday as a limited participant. Still, he didn't receive a designation at that time, so his change in status may impact the team's running back rotation this weekend. Behind Chris Carson, Carlos Hyde and DeeJay Dallas are the other healthy options, while Alex Collins is a candidate to be elevated from the practice squad to the active roster if Penny is unable to play Saturday.

Musters up 19 yards
Penny rushed six times for 19 yards in Sunday's 26-23 win over the 49ers.
Analysis: Penny took on a larger role in his third game back from a torn ACL because Carlos Hyde (illness) didn't make the trip to San Francisco. The San Diego State product logged 28 of 65 offensive snaps, finishing just behind Chris Carson's 30 snaps but comfortably ahead of Alex Collins' 11 snaps. Carson drew more work while on the field, as he totaled 83 yards on 13 touches, and Collins was more efficient than Penny with 29 yards and a touchdown on five carries. Bumps to No. 2 role
Penny (knee) is slated to work as Seattle's No. 2 running back in Sunday's game against the 49ers with Carlos Hyde (illness) ruled out, Brady Henderson of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Penny's reps have been managed since he returned from a torn ACL, as he logged just 10 snaps and five carries over two games. The third-year running back could have an opportunity to step up in Week 17, and the coaching staff has hinted that Penny's time is coming. Earlier in the week, Seahawks offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer stated that Penny was on the verge of "a breakout moment." Chris Carson is still the clear lead back, but Penny is expected to see a decent increase in reps…read more

Clear of injury for Week 17
Penny (knee) does not carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the 49ers, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports.
Analysis: Penny made a late-week appearance on the injury report by posting a limited session Thursday. This constituted a notable development given that Penny tore his ACL last December and went without a game appearance until Week 15 of this season. The 24-year-old has garnered five rush attempts for 15 yards in his two 2020 appearances, and it appears he's in line for a Week 17 appearance as well given Seattle's latest injury update. Limited at practice Thursday
Penny (knee) was a limited participant at Thursday's practice, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: Penny required more than a year of rehab after tearing his ACL along with other knee ligaments last December, but he's played in each of the last two games, logging 10 total snaps on offense. It's a bit concerning that he's back on the injury report, especially because he wasn't listed Wednesday, but it's possible that it's just for maintenance purposes. Penny's injury status should be more clear on Friday's practice report. His availability for the season finale against the 49ers could be more…read more

Plays just four snaps
Penny rushed three times for nine yards in Sunday's 20-9 win over the Rams.
Analysis: Penny played just four of 63 snaps on offense, finishing well behind Chris Carson (40) and Carlos Hyde (20). He certainly showed some shiftiness in his short stint on the field, and it'll be interesting to see if the Seahawks ramp up his playing time in next week's game against the 49ers.

Eases into action Sunday
Penny rushed twice for six yards in Sunday's 20-15 win over Washington.
Analysis: After more than a year of recovery from a torn ACL, Penny made his return to the field Sunday and got his feet wet with just six snaps. The Seahawks likely will see how his body responds to the contact before ramping up his workload. The 2018 first-round pick isn't expected to take on major responsibility this year, but perhaps he can usurp Carlos Hyde as Seattle's No. 2 back by the start of the playoffs. He'll look to build on his recent progress next week against the Rams.

Comes off PUP list
The Seahawks activated Penny (knee) from the PUP list Saturday, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports.
Analysis: Coach Pete Carroll said earlier this week that Penny, who returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since tearing his ACL last season, is expected to suit up for Sunday's home game against Washington. The 2018 first-round pick hasn't appeared in NFL action in over a year, and he's only had the benefit of a few days of practice, so the Seahawks could opt to ease him back into a rotation with Carlos Hyde and Chris Carson.

Preparing to play in Week 15
Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny (knee) is practicing with the intent of playing Sunday against Washington, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: Penny returned to practice last Wednesday, opening his 21-day window to be activated from the PUP list. The 2018 first-round pick immediately drew praise from the organization's leaders; Russell Wilson called him "electric," and Carroll said he "exceeded expectations with his movement and his quickness," according to Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle. Looking 'great' in practice
Coach Pete Carroll said Penny (knee) "looked great" in practice this week, but the earliest the running back will return is Week 15 at Washington, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: The Seahawks opened Penny's 21-day window to be activated from the PUP list Wednesday, and he's thoroughly impressed everyone in the organization so far. On Thursday, Russell Wilson noted Penny has "been electric" and is "physical, quick, catches the ball well, he picks up his protections," per Brady Henderson of ESPN.com. Returns to practice
Penny (knee) returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since tearing his ACL last season, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: Penny has been on the PUP list all season, but his return to practice will officially open a 21-day window for the team to add the 2018 first-round pick back to the 53-man roster. Given that Penny is a full year removed from the ACL tear, he could be ready to jump right back into game action if the coaching and medical staffs are satisfied with how he looks in practice this week. If cleared to play, Penny would likely jostle with Carlos Hyde for No. 2 duties behind starting running back Chris…read more

Practicing next week
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Penny (knee) is slated to join the team for practice next week, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Analysis: Penny has been sidelined for a full year after tearing the ACL in his left knee, but the third-year running back finally is ready to take a major step forward in his recovery by getting back on the practice field. Once he takes part in his first practice, Penny will initiate a 21-day window for the Seahawks to evaluate him for a return to the 53-man roster. Inching closer to return
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday that Penny (knee) should return to practice later this week or early next week, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Penny is nearing the finish line in his recovery from the torn ACL that he suffered in Week 14 of the 2019 season. Once he's cleared to take the practice field, the 24-year-old running back may need some time to fully ramp up, as he sustained major knee damage beyond just the ACL tear. Once he's back to 100 percent, Penny will likely challenge Carlos Hyde (toe) for the No. 2 role behind top back Chris Carson (foot).

Could practice next week
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday that he's hoping Penny (knee) will be ready to practice with the team next week, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Penny has been sidelined all season while rehabbing from the torn ACL he suffered Week 14 of 2019, but he looks to finally be nearing the finish line in his recovery. Because of his lengthy layoff, Penny will likely require several practices to get up to full speed, so he may still be multiple weeks away from making his way back to the 53-man roster. If he does get activated at some point, the Seahawks probably wouldn't ask him to take on more than a handful of touches per game behind lead back…read more

Still a few weeks away
Coach Pete Carroll said Thursday that Penny (knee) is "a few weeks away" from retaking the field, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports.
Analysis: Penny has spent the entire 2020 campaign on the PUP list and still hasn't practiced, but it appears that the Seahawks still expect him to return at some point this season. However, just as the PUP list restricts players from practicing for the first six weeks of the season, it is also required that players must either then resume practicing, shift to IR or be released after an additional five weeks elapse, so Seattle will need to make a decision on Penny sooner rather than later.

Still not practicing
Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny (knee) is making good progress but hasn't returned to practice, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports. "It's just a matter of when they feel and he feels ready to go out there and bang those cuts," Carroll said.
Analysis: Carroll has been ambivalent about Penny's condition all season, consistently praising the running back's recovery but falling short of providing a clear timeline to return. Time is running out, though, as Penny will need to return to practice by Week 11. Otherwise, he'll be required to stay on the PUP list for the rest of the season.

Not likely for Week 8 return
Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny (knee) will "probably not" return Week 8 against the 49ers, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Carroll appears committed to not rushing Penny back from the ACL tear he sustained Week 14 last season, even with Chris Carson set to undergo an MRI on what's been called a mid-foot sprain. The decision to allow Penny extended time to rehab likely stems in part due to Carroll's confidence in No. 2 running back Carlos Hyde, in addition to the fact that Penny's surgery uncovered additional damage in his knee. An official timetable for the 2018 first-round pick's return still remains undisclosed.

No timeline yet for return
Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that there's "no set ETA" for Penny (knee) to return to the Seahawks' active roster, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Two weeks removed from saying Penny was "getting really close" but wouldn't be rushed back, Carroll had another non-update on Penny's recovery from the torn left ACL he suffered Week 14 of last season. The prolonged rehab likely stems from the additional damage found in the knee during surgery, but there's no sense yet when the Seahawks will open his window to return from the reserve/PUP list. Won't be rushed back
Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny (knee) is close to returning but won't be rushed back into the lineup, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports.
Analysis: Penny tore his ACL last year Week 14 and wasn't 100 percent to begin the 2020 season, so he was placed on the PUP list to ensure a full recovery. Carroll has consistently praised Penny's progress, and the 2018 first-rounder will be eligible to return to the lineup in Week 7's matchup against the 49ers. 'Ahead of schedule' in recovery
Coach Pete Carroll called Penny "ahead of schedule" in his recovery from a torn ACL, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Penny tore up his left knee Week 14 of last season, and his subsequent surgery revealed additional damage on top of the ACL tear. It wasn't a surprise by any means that he started this season on the reserve/PUP list, but Carroll seems to believe Penny will be able to practice not long after he's first eligible to do so in mid-to-late October. Starts season on PUP list
The Seahawks placed Penny (knee) on the reserve/PUP list Saturday, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Analysis: This move was expected all along, as Penny's December knee injury revealed damage beyond just a torn ACL. The Seahawks can afford to keep him on the sidelines until he's fully healthy as well since they signed Carlos Hyde (undisclosed) and drafted DeeJay Dallas this offseason. They also have second-year back Travis Homer on the roster. Penny can be activated off the PUP list and begin practicing after Week 6. Analysis: The transaction came shortly after coach Pete Carroll said Penny would report to training camp Friday and go through COVID-19 intake testing, per Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune. Headed for PUP list?
Penny (knee) could open the 2020 season on the PUP list, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: The Seahawks have consistently been optimistic about Chris Carson's recovery from a hip fracture, while the tone has been far more cautious when discussing Penny's rehab from ACL surgery. GM John Schneider cautioned that the timeline could be tricky, noting that the 2018 first-round pick suffered his major injury late in the season (Dec. 8 to be exact). Preseason PUP candidate
Penny (knee) is a candidate to begin training camp on the Seahawks' preseason PUP list, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports.
Analysis: That's not surprising considering Penny tore his ACL in Week 14 of the 2019 season and subsequently had surgery later in December. Given the timing of his injury, coupled with reports that the running back's knee woes went beyond his ACL tear, Penny's status for Seattle's season opener remains murky. Has additional damage beyond ACL
Penny's knee injury involves more damage than just a torn ACL, Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune reports. "There were some other things that they had to clean up and all that," said Seahawks coach Pete Carroll. "It was more than just a simple ACL surgery."
Analysis: An ACL tear typically requires 9-to-12 months for recovery/rehab, and additional damage to the knee will make it even more of a challenge for Penny to be ready by Week 1 of 2020. The Seahawks do anticipate a return to full strength eventually, with the 2018 first-round pick presumably hoping to contribute to the team at some point during his third pro season. Penny (knee) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official sitereports.
Analysis: This was a mere formality, as Penny is slated to have surgery to repair his torn ACL, which he suffered last Sunday against the Rams. The 2018 first-round pick does not have a recovery timetable set as of yet, but it's possible the extensive knee injury could ultimately force Penny to miss portions of the 2020 season as well, though more information regarding the expected timeline won't occur until some time after the initial surgery.

Penny (knee) has been ruled out for the rest of the 2019 season, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Analysis: Penny suffered a knee injury on the first drive of Sunday's 28-12 loss to the Rams, and additional testing revealed he's dealing with an ACL sprain. The second-year running back will be placed on IR soon, and he'll finish the season with 65 rushes for 370 yards (5.7 YPC) and three touchdowns while adding eight receptions for 83 yards and a score. Coach Pete Carroll described Penny's injury as a significant ACL sprain in his post-game interview after Sunday's loss to the Rams, Aaron J. Fentress of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: While Penny will likely require additional tests to determine just how significant this injury is, it sounds like he's staring at a multi-week absence. Penny may be in line for more consistent work moving forward, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. "We are going to see if we can get more out of [Penny]," coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday.
Analysis: Penny and starter Chris Carson split the offensive snaps almost down the middle during Sunday's 17-9 win at Philadelphia, with the former getting 30 to the latter's 31 (of 61 total). Taking advantage of a career-high share of those plays, Penny compiled 14 carries for 129 yards and one touchdown, while Carson gained 57 yards from scrimmage on his 12 touches and fumbled for a seventh time this season. Penny rushed twice for two yards and lost a fumble in Monday's 27-24 win over the 49ers.
Analysis: It took until the first drive of the second half for Penny to log an offensive snap, and he almost immediately made the Seahawks' coaching staff regret its decision by fumbling at midfield. The second-year pro didn't see the field after that whiff. Chris Carson also fumbled the football (the Seahawks recovered), but it was clear he had a longer leash than Penny by recording 28 touches. Four carries in win
Penny rushed four times for 12 yards in Sunday's 40-34 overtime win against the Buccaneers.
Analysis: Penny impressed last week as he managed 55 yards on just eight carries, but his role dried up in this outing. Despite Chris Carson fumbling twice, Penny barely got on the field, as he logged 11 of a possible 75 offensive snaps. Carson's fumbles are a concern, but he racked up 105 yards on 16 carries while catching both targets for 28 yards. His production seems to cancel out the costly turnovers at this point, but Penny remains a valuable handcuff in case Carson is injured.
