Pens one-year deal
Rosen signed a one-year contract with the 49ers on Wednesday.
Analysis: Rosen will finish out the season with San Francisco, and it's possible the team will even thrust him into a starting role for the season finale to see whether the 2018 first-round pick has something to offer. Given his lack of familiarity with the team's system, Rosen will open as the backup to C.J. Beathard, who will start Saturday's game against the Cardinals with Nick Mullens (elbow) and Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) both unlikely to play again in 2020.

Signs with 49ers
The 49ers signed Rosen off the Buccaneers' practice squad Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Rosen was cut by the Dolphins in September and landed on the Bucs' practice squad, and he's finally found a new home. The 49ers need depth at quarterback following news that Nick Mullens (elbow) is done for the year and Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) isn't expected to be activated from IR. In turn, Rosen will serve as C.J. Beathard's backup in Saturday's game versus the Cardinals, who selected him 10th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Lands on Tampa Bay's practice squad
Rosen signed with the Buccaneers' practice squad Sunday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: After going unclaimed on waivers, Rosen apparently could've signed with an active roster elsewhere, but he chose to restart his career in a good situation in Tampa Bay. With head coach Bruce Arians and legendary QB Tom Brady, Rosen stands to learn a lot as a practice squad member with the Buccaneers, and he can be patient as he develops before seeking a new team.

Goes unclaimed on waivers
Rosen wasn't claimed on waivers, thus becoming a free agent, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Rosen is a free agent for the first time since being selected 10th overall by the Cardinals in the 2018 NFL Draft. Apparently, Rosen's agents actively lobbied teams not to claim him off waivers, providing the 23-year-old an opportunity to choose where he'll get a fresh start. The quarterback has spent the last two seasons with the Cardinals and Dolphins, and although he underperformed, neither of those teams were ideal for his development. Rosen will seek a backup job where he can fine-tune his…read more

Bengals not interested
The Bengals will not use their top waiver priority on Rosen, Jay Morrison of The Athletic reports. "That's not the direction we're headed right now," coach Zac Taylor said.
Analysis: This really shouldn't be a surprise -- the Bengals just used the first overall pick of the 2020 draft on Joe Burrow and aren't looking for another project as a potential future starting quarterback. They might, however, look for a third quarterback on the waiver wire just to have some depth.

Waived by Dolphins
The Dolphins waived Rosen on Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: This was a bit of a surprise since the Dolphins were apparently fielding trade calls for Rosen, but this was the inevitable conclusion if they couldn't find a proper suitor. Rosen played six games for the Dolphins last season and completed 53 percent of his passes and registered 5.2 yards per attempt. If the 2018 first-round pick isn't claimed on waivers, expect him to find his third franchise in three years after teams cut their rosters to 53 players Saturday.

On trading block, again
Rosen could be traded within the next week, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The Dolphins reportedly have fielded some inquiries, perhaps benefiting from positive updates on Rosen coming out of training camp. It's even been suggested that Rosen could start out ahead of Tua Tagovailoa for the No. 2 quarterback job, but that obviously becomes a moot point if the 2018 first-round pick is traded to his third NFL team in as many years.

Shows improvement
Rosen has been "arguably the most consistent of all of three quarterbacks" in the early days of Dolphins training camp, according to ESPN's Cameron Wolfe.
Analysis: Tua Tagovailoa is the future in Miami, while Ryan Fitzpatrick is the likely Week 1 starter. Rosen is left in an odd position, without the benefit of preseason games to potentially drum up trade interest. He reportedly looks better in practice than he did at the same time last year, but his struggles during the 2019 season figure to be the larger factor for any team that's in the market for a backup quarterback.

No update on potential trade/cut
Coach Brian Flores didn't say if Rosen has requested a trade or release, merely saying that the young quarterback can earn reps based on his practice performance, Joe Schad of The Palm Beach Post reports.
Analysis: The comment about earning reps feels like empty coach-speak, considering the Dolphins have Ryan Fitzpatrick and rookie first-round pick Tua Tagovailoa in their QB room. Common sense suggests Rosen is the odd man out, or at least No. 3 in the pecking order for practice snaps. His rookie contract is fully guaranteed, so the Dolphins won't gain anything but a roster spot if they release him.

Could have future in Miami?
GM Chris Grier said the Dolphins haven't given up on Rosen's development, Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: Grier makes a reasonable point about Rosen being held back by coaching changes, including three different offensive coordinators at UCLA and three more through two seasons in the NFL. Even so, teams expect to see a basic level of competence from their players, and Rosen failed to deliver that for both the 2018 Cardinals and 2019 Dolphins. Grier may believe there's still hope for Rosen to succeed in the NFL, but that probably won't stop the GM from using an early draft pick on another…read more

Not being considered for Week 17
Coach Brian Flores said Thursday that he isn't considering playing Rosen during Sunday's season finale against the Patriots, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Flores shot down the concept of giving Ryan Fitzpatrick the start and then handing the reins over to Rosen, saying he intends to "stick to what we've been doing," per Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com. A decision to have Fitzpatrick finish the season under center wouldn't come as much of a surprise, considering the veteran's recent quality of play, though it would mean Rosen won't get another shot to prove himself in game action during the 2019 campaign. With Fitzpatrick and Rosen both still under…read more

Entrenched as No. 2 option
Coach Brian Flores said Monday that Ryan Fitzpatrick will remain the Dolphins' starting quarterback for the "foreseeable future," Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Rosen's position as Miami's backup quarterback looks set in stone for the time being, with Fitzpatrick now having led the team to consecutive victories. Of course, Fitzpatrick is a notoriously streaky signal-caller with a propensity to dazzle for a time before eventually falling back to earth, so it wouldn't come as much of a surprise if Rosen gets another chance under center later this season. It does appear, however, that the 22-year-old's odds of getting another start are now entirely in…read more
